Time Play:
A 25 Year Retrospective of Van McElwee's Video Art
Van McElwee, Artist

January 23, 2004 - April 4, 2004

An alchemy occurs when the outer world is transformed into video: it becomes mind-stuff.

I carry this process forward, questioning the nature of mediated reality, exploring time and dimensionality by weaving fragments of the world into new patterns.

I came to video in 1976 as a painter, printmaker and sound artist. I was inspired by the medium's potential for modulating images and sounds in time, as two facets of one idea and one experience. I saw that video could externalize imagination, allowing a powerful expression of subtle insights and intuitions.

My goal now is to make works that allow viewers to see in new ways, and that resonate in the mind like a tuning fork. Video should be something, not just be about something.
